Meggitt Safety Systems, Inc. awarded contract from Airbus for A380 fire detection systems
October 28, 2002
Meggitt Safety Systems Inc. announced today that it has received a multi-year contract from Airbus for fire detection systems that will be installed on Airbus’ superjumbo, three-deck, A380 commercial airliner that will enter service in 2006.
Meggitt Safety Systems will provide its fire detection systems for the A380 engines, APUs and main landing gears. Meggitt Safety Systems, based in Simi Valley, Ca., is a leading provider of fire detection systems for a variety of commercial and military aircraft. Airbus previously designated the Company’s fire detection products as standard equipment on all models of its aircraft.
John Stobie, president of Meggitt Aerospace Equipment, said, “This is an important multi-million dollar win for Safety Systems. Each A380 shipset will have 50 of the Company’s fire/overheat detectors. In addition to the APU and landing gear, they will be installed on the A380’s Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines and the GP7200 engines from the General Electric/Pratt & Whitney joint venture. Airbus forecasts that A380 production will continue at least through the year 2021.”
The A380 will feature the very latest technologies for materials, systems and industrial processes including a new system called CAN – controller area network – interface system that will facilitate fire detection/overheat signals.
All A380 models will contain the Meggitt Safety Systems products, including the baseline passenger aircraft, the freighter version and other stretch, shrink and extended range variants of the baseline version that is designed to carry up to 555 passengers in three classes.
